Thursday Blog: City Government

City Government

Look at our three city websites and answer the questions below on a separate sheet of paper.

Explore these three websites and comment on something that you learned about each of the three cities. There are "projects" pages where you can see current projects taking place, there is information about residents and school zones .... click around and find one fact or something you found interesting from each of the three websites and comment on the blog.

Copy and Paste the following into a Word (or Pages) document, print and then bring it to class on Monday.

  1. The first interesting thing I found on Richland's page is a cool light display in John Dam Plaza. In Kennewick, if you sign up for paperless billing by December 20th you have a chance to win a $50 gift card donated by Kennewick Waste Management. And in Pasco, you are required to get a permit to have a yard sale within the city limits. You can apply online and it is free.

  2. On Richland's page I learned that Benton County Mosquito Control District has been providing mosquito control services since 1969. On Kennewick's page, I learned that they have a public art display called the Blue Trinity. It represents the three cities and rivers, with its three sides, and the middle is open to represent the openness of the community. On Pasco's page I learned that Pasco has 20 soccer fields, and a professional indoor rodeo arena.

  3. In Richland citizens can get a low-interest loan for up to 10 years if they install a solar power system. They can get a maximum loan of $15,000. The customer has to agree to maintain that system, in return the City gets to claim the environmental benefit.

In Kennewick you can report a problem to the City like potholes, traffic signals that are not working and even things that block your visibility when driving, like overgrown bushes or trees.

If you live in Pasco and own a dog, you are required to get a license for it. Cat licenses are optional. The City stated that dog licenses help lost dogs get reunited with their owners. Otherwise they could end up getting put to sleep if they do not get adopted at the animal shelter.

  4. I learned that the Richland fire department became a official city fire department on march 25th 1959. It had existed before that but it was controlled by the federal government as part of the Hanford project.
In Kennewick I learned that you can file a complaint if your neighbors dog is barking (without provocation) for five minutes.
In Pasco from may to September there is a "Yard of The Month" award that will be given to an outstanding property that has been maintained very well.

  5. For Richland, I learned that if you are inside the city limits of Kennewick, Richland, West Richland, Benton City, or Prosser you are never allowed to burn yard debris at your residence. For Kennewick I learned that there is a Girls night Out fundraiser that is put on to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. For Pasco, I learned that the awards for the "Yard of the Month" contest are A Yard of the Month sign that identifies the property, a proclamation certificate awarded by the Pasco City Council, name and address published in an advertisement in the Tri-City Herald, and pictures of the winning yards will be displayed at City Hall

  6. I learned for Richland District that the snow plows only plow for main school routes. Richland has scheduled irrigation times for different days of the week in different areas. I didn't know that Richland had a submarine memorial park. In Kennewick I learned that the new Fire station in Kennewick cost 3.775 million dollars. In Pasco I learned they require all dogs and owners to have a license and vaccinations.

  7. For Richland District I learned that Street Maintenance crews will be doing wheelchair ramps and sidewalk work in various locations citywide. For Kennewick District I learned that there is a police citizens Academy that is a 5 week 10 session series of classes that provides an overview of the Kennewick Police Department operations and functions. For Pasco I learned that you have to license your dogs if you live in Pasco and that if 1 pet gets away, you can find it again.
